The prices of vegetables and fruits are still witnessing a rise in most of the Kingdom’s markets, which angered Moroccans, calling for the need for government intervention to stop these increases, which coincided with the rise in fuel prices by more than 1.5 dirhams.
The increases included a group of basic vegetables in the Moroccan tables, where the prices of potatoes ranged between 8 and 9 dirhams per kilogram, while the prices of tomatoes, onions and carrots exceeded 7 dirhams.
A number of professionals inside the Casablanca wholesale market confirmed that drought, heat, and the large amount of internal and external demand during the summer are among the factors that contributed to the high prices of vegetables and fruits.
The same sources also highlighted that the recent increases in fuel prices have also affected the prices of various basic products in the markets.
On the other hand, the parliamentary opposition voices repeatedly called for reforming wholesale markets, given that most of them are unstructured and operate in a random manner, which contributed to the large number of intermediaries.
He also called on the opposition to create a national agency to reorganize the production chains, while fighting monopoly and legalizing the role of middlemen to limit the high prices of vegetables and fruits in the national markets.
