Beauty pageants are not exempt from criticism. Especially in the last decade, with the wave of the feminist movement and, therefore, the Miss Universe organization has sought to be inclusive by eliminating, for example, the age limit for contestants.
The winner was Victoria Kjaer, 21 years old, artist, jewelry businesswoman and graduate in Marketing, but called ‘Human Barbie’. Miss Denmark reached the final together with Miss Nigeria, Chidimma Adetshina. The organization awards a prize of $250,000 and the new Miss Universe will work with them for a year. “This is the biggest dream of my life for me, so I want to say to all of you: ‘keep working hard, keep dreaming and you will always be able to achieve your dreams,'” said the Dane.
Aside from the criticism about beauty pageants, the controversy has also revolved around the disadvantages that some candidates had. In the case of Miss Venezuela, Ileana Márquez, there was an error in the translation regarding the meaning of ‘ideal woman’ and what she considers an ‘ideal moment’.
The question was posed in English by Judge Margaret Gardiner, regarding the qualities of a “perfect woman.” Márquez—who came in 5th place—requested support from a translator and was asked about his “ideal moment.” The Telemundo network indicated that his response “could have been a decisive factor in his final evaluation.”
Days before the ceremony, the representative of Panama, Italy Mora, was expelled. “This decision has been made after an evaluation by our disciplinary commission,” the organization said.
Miss Panama was not replaced and gave her defense on social networks. “I consider it to be a very severe measure. This event has been difficult to assimilate emotionally, especially due to the time, effort, resources and support of the people who made my preparation to represent my country possible. “I maintain my position of demanding from the organization a formal copy of my dismissal and the sanctions applied.”
Miss Peru, Tatiana Calmell, was chosen ‘continental queen of the Americas’, even though she could not reach the top 5. The Peruvian was part of the 12 finalists. “You did incredible, queen, you left your heart in the competition and all of Peru is proud of you and your work. “You made the universe vibrate,” commented Janick Maceta.
