Sports Desk. By-elections are being held today on 32 assembly seats in 10 states of the country. This also includes the Lok Sabha seat of Wayanad in Kerala. Some of these seats had become vacant after the MLAs won the Lok Sabha elections, while on some seats the MLAs had died. Voting is very important in the by-elections being held today in Wayanad, from where Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi is contesting for the first time.
According to the Election Commission of India, 13.04% voting has taken place till 9 am in Jharkhand (Phase-1). Voters are sitting outside the booth center and raising slogans. The by-elections being held on 32 seats are being seen as a big litmus test for BJP and Congress. JDS leader Nikhil Kumaraswamy is contesting from Channapatna in Karnataka. The seat fell vacant after his father and Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy was elected to the Lok Sabha. BJP has fielded Bharat Bommai, son of former Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, from Shiggaon. He will face Congress candidate Yasir Ahmed Khan Pathan.
There are by-elections in Tarari, Imamganj, Ramgarh and Belaganj seats in Bihar. Voting is also taking place on Budhni and Vijaypur assembly seats of Madhya Pradesh. The by-election is being held on Budhni seat because MLA and former Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan has been elected to the Lok Sabha and is now the Union Agriculture Minister. Voting is going on on 6 seats in West Bengal.
