What you need to know:
In the next elections in 2024 we will not have independent candidates for the Presidency. Here we tell you why.
The 2024 elections in Mexico are almost here and the doubt arises as to whether we will have independent candidates for the Presidency. Well, the answer is no.
We are just short of the end of the period to deliver the signatures of citizen support that are needed to be independent and no one is going to reach the goal.
We will not have independent candidates for the Presidency in Mexico
According to the INE registry, 111 people signed up with the intention of running for an independent candidacy, 32 of whom were running for the Presidency. In the end only 9 proceeded.
On September 8, 2023, they were given the applicant certificate. But do not think that this means that they are already candidates, but rather that they could already begin to meet the requirements to be one.
Those who want to be independent candidates for the presidency have to gather the signatures of at least 1% of the nominal list of Mexico, who belong to at least 17 states and who in each state make up at least 1% of the state nominal list. Just over 960 thousand signatures.
On the list of those who came to collect signatures were several names headed by Eduardo Verástegui.
The deadline to submit the necessary signatures is January 6, 2024, not one day more.
To begin with, Hugo Eric Flores, from the former PES, gave up on the mission with a total of 8 signatures together, so only 8 remained.
Until January 1, 2024, the one who heads the list of the most signatures collected is Verástegui with 139,162 signatures, 14.4% progress compared to what is needed.
The next is Ulises Ernesto Ruiz with 6% progress and the others do not exceed 1%.
Still in December of last year, during the last days, the General Council of the INE denied Eduardo Verástegui’s request to extend the period to deliver the signatures.
This denial was later confirmed by the Electoral Tribunal of the Judicial Branch of the Federation (TEPJF).
In interviews with various media outlets, the actor stated that the app does not work and that he is being robbed of the possibility of being a candidate.
