English club West Ham have signed Argentine international midfielder Guido Rodriguez as their sixth signing of the summer transfer window, the club announced in a statement.
The 30-year-old, who won the 2022 World Cup and the 2021 and 2024 Copa America, was available on the transfer market for free after his contract with Spanish club Real Betis expired.
Rodriguez has played in Spain for the last four and a half years, where he was a key player for the Andalusian team that reached the European Championships in the last four seasons.
“I feel that playing in the Premier League is every footballer’s dream, I was very excited when I heard that West Ham were interested in signing me,” the player said in the statement.
“I will bring experience to the squad and, although I know the Premier League is very physical, I am prepared to work hard to make sure I am up to the task,” he said. West Ham have added Germany international striker Niclas Füllkrug, Dutch wingers Crescencio Summerville and Luis Guilherme and defender Max Kilman to their squad in their first season under Spanish coach Julen Lopetegui.
Technical director Tim Steiden said the signing of Rodriguez was a “statement of intent” as they seek to improve on last season’s ninth-place finish in the Premier League.
“It is a huge moment for West Ham United to sign players of Guido’s calibre,” added Steiden. “He is a player I have admired for a long time and we couldn’t be happier to have completed the deal to bring him to east London.”
