New Delhi: The nomination process for the post of All India Congress Party President started yesterday. Sasi Tharoor MP to contest election. Received the nomination form. Ashok Khelat has said that he will file the petition soon.
Rahul Gandhi took charge of the All India Congress party in December 2017 after Sonia Gandhi stepped down as president of the All India Congress. The state elections that followed and the Lok Sabha elections in 2019, the Congress under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi continued to face defeats. Rahul Gandhi resigned from the post of party president in August 2019. Sonia was reappointed as interim president.
Meanwhile, changes must be brought about within the party. 23 leaders, including senior leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad and Kapil Sibal, wrote to Sonia asking her to choose the leader. However, no change was made in the party.
In this situation, many senior leaders have been urging Rahul Gandhi to accept the post of Congress president. But Rahul categorically refused to accept the post of president. After this, the election of the Congress President was announced. Madhusudhan Mistry has been appointed as the President of the Congress Central Election Committee. In this case, the nomination process started yesterday. Time has been given to file nomination till 30th.
Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Khelat is confirmed to contest the Congress president election. Likewise, the party M.P. Sasi Tharoor received the nomination form yesterday to contest the elections. Reports surfaced that a representative of Sasi Tharoor had bought nomination forms from Central Election Commission Chairman Madhusudhan Mistry. With this, Shashi Tharoor is the first person to contest the Congress president election. Also, veteran leader Manish Tiwari is expected to contest. Therefore, this time a person who does not belong to the Gandhi family will become the party leader.
Speaking about this yesterday, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Khelat said, “We have talked to Rahul many times to accept the post of party leader. He did not agree to that. Also, while consulting Sonia Gandhi, she said that she will stay neutral in the presidential election. Therefore, no one from the Gandhi family contested the party president election this time. In this situation, I am sure to compete. I will file my nomination soon,” he said.
This time the party president could not be elected unanimously as Sonia and Rahul withdrew. Therefore, the polling will be held on October 19 and the new leader of the Congress Party will be announced on that day.
What G-23 leaders thought happened
Prithviraj Chavan, former Chief Minister of Maharashtra and a senior member of the state Congress, told reporters yesterday:
Internal elections should be held in Congress. G-23 leaders, including myself, wrote to Sonia Gandhi to appoint a permanent president for the party. Now the election for the post of party president has been announced. What we thought happened. So, ‘G-23’ is over. But the newly elected party leader should be a full-time leader and not a part-time leader. If problems arise in the electoral democratic process, we will raise our voice. State Congressmen say that either Sonia Gandhi should choose the party president or Rahul Gandhi himself should take over. Why say that? Instead, the election for the post of party leader should be strengthened.
Even if Rahul Gandhi wants to contest now, we will welcome him. He can file nomination. We are not against the Gandhi family. This is what he said.
