Who Is Alejandro Zárate, The Musician Who Discovered Muñequita Sally, Johnny Orosco And Centella?

The talented guitarist and composer Alejandro Zárate Espinoza founded the group Pintura Roja four decades ago with the purpose of spreading the catchy rhythm of Peruvian cumbia throughout the five continents. Thanks to his excellent eye for talent, he discovered great artists such as Johnny Orosco, Toño Centella, Milagros Soto (Princesita Mily), Sara Haydee Barreto (Muñequita Sally) and Antonio Domínguez, who began their careers in this tropical group.

The story of Alejandro Zarate

Born in the small district of laraos, Alejandro Zárate had a rather complicated childhood, as he was left an orphan of father and mother at an early age. Left to his fate, he and his brother had to do everything to survive and get ahead.

However, his destiny changed course when he entered the Peruvian Navy at the age of 18 and in compliance with his duties he visited several countries, including Panama, the Netherlands, England and France. Despite his busy life, he never gave up his dream of being a great artist, which is why he very sporadically played with the group he founded: Los Dinámicos, which, some time later, became Pintura Roja.

At the end of his military life and making the decision to dedicate himself completely to his art, Zárate set out to venture into a much fresher and more fun cumbia. To fulfill this purpose, he put the daughter of one of his musicians, Milagros Soto, to sing, who would be the first woman to vocally venture into the genre and would later adopt the stage name of princess mily.
