New Delhi| After garnering a substantial chunk of global OTT streaming revenue, Netflix has announced that it is ready to launch games on mobile phones as it plans to bring in new and promising diversity. Its revenue (y-o-y) jumped 19 per cent in the April-June 3 months to record operating income of $7.3 billion, up 36 per cent to $1.8 billion, the streaming giant said late on Tuesday. It is in the initial stages. The games are to expand further, building on their earlier efforts around interactivity (Black Mirror Bandersnatch) and the “Stranger Things” games.
The company, which now has 209 million paid subscriptions globally, sees gaming as another new content category for us, similar to our expansion into original movies, animation and unscripted TV.
In its letter to shareholders, Netflix said that games will be included in members’ Netflix subscriptions at no additional cost, similar to movies and series.
To begin with, we will primarily focus on games for mobile devices. We are as excited as ever about our movies and TV series offerings and look forward to increased investments in all our existing content categories and a long runway of growth, the company emphasized.
Netflix.de said that, since we’re nearly a decade ahead in original programming, we think the time is right to learn more about how our members value sports.
The company acknowledged that Covid has caused some slack in its subscription growth (high growth in 2020, slow growth this year).
“We continue to focus on improving our service for our members and bringing them the best stories from around the world,” Netflix said.
Netflix added 1.5 million paid subscriptions in the second quarter. The APAC region represented nearly two-thirds of its global payments net additions in the quarter.
For U3, the company forecast net additions of 3.5 million versus 2.2 million in the prior year period.
The OTT company said that, if we achieve our forecast, we would have added over 54 million paid net additions in the last 24 months or 27 million on an annualized basis over that time period, which is the number of net additions. In line with our pre-COVID annual rate.
Last week, Netflix series and specials received 129 Emmy nominations. With 24 nominations, The Crown tied for the most nominated series.
Our non-English content investments are growing in both scope and impact, Netflix said.
In the race to entertain consumers around the world, we continue to compete for screen time with a broad set of companies such as YouTube, Epic Games and TikTok, the company said. But, we are mostly competing with ourselves for our improvement. We will serve you as fast as we can.
