The twenty-fourth edition of the Dubai Open Chess Championship, organized by the Dubai Chess and Culture Club, will begin at five in the evening on Saturday, in which 200 players, both male and female, from 40 countries will participate, including more than 80 players who hold international titles, with total prizes of $52,000 and continuing until… The second of next June.
The tournament is one of the most famous international tournaments with a distinguished reputation, and it was an important milestone for a group of players, perhaps the most prominent of whom is world champion Magnus Carlsson, whose Dubai Open Chess Championship in 2004 was his real launch towards the title of international grandmaster. The organizing committee for this tournament works annually to attract the best international players to create a strong competition atmosphere, and to contribute to the development of young Emirati players in light of the approaching major international competition next September, which is the World Chess Olympiad in the Hungarian capital, Budapest.
The tournament will be held in categories (A) and (B) after the success of the experiment last year. The players were distributed in both tournaments based on the global rankings of the participants. At the top of the tournament list is Azerbaijani international grandmaster Temur Rajabov (2729), followed by Indian international grandmaster Rank Sadhwani (2654), and the highest seed is Chinese international grandmaster Lu Mayoya (2437).
The tournament is held using the Swiss system of 9 rounds, and the match time is 90 minutes, with 30 seconds added for each move. The Emirati side is heavily present in the tournament arbitration, headed by Mahdi Abdel Rahim, and in the presence of a group of Emirati youth wishing to gain experience, in light of a permanent Emirati presence in international forums at the arbitration level.
