Where the wolf came from can only be said in a few weeks, when the DNA research on wolf samples is completed, according to BIJ12, the agency that handles wolf affairs for the provinces.
The wolf was shot after biting a sheep farmer. That happened when the farmer wanted to chase the predator away and was chasing it with a shovel. The wolf could not escape from the fenced pasture. After the bite, the mayor of Westerveld, to which Wapse belongs, decided that the wolf had to be shot. That is allowed if a wolf endangers public safety. Whether this was the case in Wapse remains to be seen from further research.
A research institute of Wageningen University is doing the DNA research. From this, it can be determined, among other things, whether the wolf belonged to the pack that is close to Wapse in the Drents-Friese Wold.
