Women on the pitch!  BCCI after billions

Kochi: BCCI has achieved a record through Women’s Premier League. BCCI has collected more than 5,000 crore rupees. Mukesh Ambani and Adani were present for WPL. While Adani has invested Rs 1,289 crore, Mukesh Ambani is ready to pour in Rs 912 crore. Mukesh Ambani-owned Reliance Group is taking over the Mumbai team by offering Rs 912.99 crore. This is the second highest amount after Adani Group’s offer. The Adani-owned company acquired the Ahmedabad franchise for Rs 1,289 crore. WPL is the second biggest T20 league in the world after the Indian Premier League. The five teams fetched a total of Rs 4,669.99 crore in the auction. A total of twenty league matches and two playoff matches will be played over 23 days.

The teams are Delhi Capitals, Gujarat Giants, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore and UP Warriors. The most expensive amount spent in the auction was for Indian player Smriti Mandana, who was acquired by Royal Challengers for Rs 3.40 crore. Although women’s cricket is not very popular in India, this time the Adani Group took advantage of the opportunity to acquire a franchise in the Women’s Premier League (WPL). Royal Challengers Sports is the third highest bidder. 901 crore was spent for Bengaluru. JSW GMR Cricket bid Rs 810 crore for Delhi and Capri Global Holdings bid Rs 757 crore for Lucknow.

BCCI’s plan to start a women’s T20 league on the lines of the IPL has received great response ever since. Top corporate houses have shown interest in acquiring five teams. The BCCI received around Rs 5,000 crore after the auction was completed.The record amount of the men’s IPL in 2008 was also broken by the high auction amount for the WPL teams.
