Benoni: Women’s U-19 Cricket World Cup starts today in South Africa. The International Cricket Council (ICC) is hosting this series for the first time, giving young players a great opportunity to shine on the world stage.
ICC has been conducting the U-19 Cricket World Cup for men since 1988. So far 14 series have been conducted. But this is the first time that the Women’s U19 World Cup series has been held. Women’s cricket has grown tremendously in the last 5 years. However, the U19 World Cup series has been promoted by the ICC to popularize the game and discover the talents of young players.
The series was scheduled to be held in 2021. But it is happening now due to Corona infection.
The T20 format of the World Cup cricket series will start today and continue till the 29th. A total of 41 matches will be played in 4 venues including Benoni and Potchefstroom in this series with 16 teams participating.
Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, Ireland, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, West Indies and Zimbabwe have qualified directly for the U-19 World Cup series with 11 teams having ICC full-time status.
Along with these teams, USA, United Arab Emirates, Rwanda, Scotland and Indonesia will also participate as one team each from the 5 regions of the ICC.
Indian team led by Shabali Verma is placed in ‘C’ category. South Africa, Scotland and United Arab Emirates are also competing in the same division. India will take on South Africa in their first match today at 5.15 pm. In another match which will be held at the same time, Sri Lanka – USA teams will face each other.
Earlier in the game at 1.30 pm Australia – Bangladesh, Scotland – United Arab Emirates teams are going to face each other. Richa Ghosh, who has played international matches with Shabali Verma, is also considered a strength in the Indian team.
