New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has hailed Sania Mirza as the pride of India.
Six-time Grand Slam-winning Indian tennis star Sania Mirza retired from international tennis last month with a tournament in Dubai. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has written a letter to Sania Mirza praising her tennis career.
It said: You have left an indelible mark on Indian sports. It will inspire the next generation of players. With your outstanding performance, the world has seen India’s sporting prowess. When you started playing, the tennis landscape in India was very different. But the way you played showed that many women can play tennis and excel at it.
You have described your tennis journey which started at the age of 6 as amazing. Your journey from struggling to get on the tennis court to becoming a world-class player in the years that followed has been brilliantly narrated. You had said that winning medals for India was your greatest honour. I can say you are the pride of India. Your victory has filled the hearts and minds of every Indian with great joy. This is mentioned in the letter.
Sharing the bite on Twitter, Sania Mirza wrote, “Want to thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi for such kind and encouraging words. I am always proud to represent the country. And I will do my best to make India proud. Thank you for your support.”
