The statement of the head of the foreign policy service of the European Union (EU), Josep Borrell, that the ban on a number of Russian media in Europe is aimed at “protecting freedom of speech”, casts doubt on its adequacy. This was announced on Tuesday, February 7, by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.
Earlier, the European Council decided to suspend broadcasting licenses for Russian TV channels. The measure, in particular, affected NTV, Rossiya 1 and Channel One. Speaking at a conference on the fight against disinformation, which is taking place today in Brussels, Borrell said that the ban on a number of Russian media outlets in Europe is “protecting freedom of speech” and “it is necessary to go forward along this path.”
“Earlier, we qualified such actions as manifestations of liberal dictatorship. But in Borrell’s statements, they sparkled with new colors with shades of inadequacy, ”Zakharova commented on his words in her Telegram channel.
Before that, on December 6, Borrell was criticized by Twitter users. The reason was the diplomat’s words about Ukraine. In his opinion, the more destruction a country undergoes, the higher its chances of joining the European Union.
In addition, later the head of the EU foreign policy service, recalled the victories of Russia over Hitler and Napoleon, but at the same time called for continuing to arm Ukraine.
