The current president of the Czech Republic, Milos Zeman, congratulated the retired general, former chairman of the NATO military committee, Petr Pavel, on his victory in the presidential elections. This was announced on Saturday, January 28, by the press secretary of the President of the Czech Republic Jiri Ovchacek.
“Dear Mr. President, I congratulate you on your victory in the democratic [прошедших] elections. I wish you to be a good president of the Czech Republic, ”Ovchacek quoted Zeman as saying on his Twitter page.
The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, also congratulated Pavel on his victory. She stressed that his experience in security, defense and international relations will be valuable for maintaining and strengthening the unity of Europe in support of Ukraine.
“Congratulations to the President-elect. I welcome your commitment to European values,” she wrote on her Twitter page.
Earlier in the day, the counting of votes after the second round of the Czech presidential election ended. Pavel received the support of 58.32% of those who voted, while his rival Andrei Babish secured the votes of 41.68% of voters. The inauguration of the new head of the Czech Republic will take place on March 9 in Prague Castle.
Earlier in the day, Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala confirmed that Pavel had been elected as the new president of the republic.
